The Cyprus landscape displays a great variety of styles. It has a surprising large number of habitats for its size. From the coasts and sweeping plains and shrublands to the vast salty lagoons, lakes and streams Cyprus is nature’s island. This has resulted in the existence of a collection of ecosystems, adding to the richness of biodiversity on the island. The coast has large open bays and rocky coastline. There are sandy dunes and shingle beaches and desert like inland. The precipitous mountains are mainly tree-covered to their peaks.
Many exquisite wild flowers grow in splendid profusion in springtime. Trees, shrubs and plants luxuriate in the Mediterranean sunshine all year round. Bright bougainvillea blazes vividly against white walls, reflecting its splendour in the crystal clear waters.
Right through this magnificent flora of the island an equally superb and unique animal kingdom emerges. From reptiles and amphibians, to terrestrial mammals and fish species. This East Mediterranean Island is also prized for its birdlife, and the migratory species that use the country as a stopover are eagerly awaited between seasons. Cyprus is used by millions of birds as a stepping-stone during their migration from Europe to Africa and back. One of the main reasons for that is the occurrence on the island of two wetlands, with unique and international importance, namely Akrotiri and Larnaca salt lakes. The Cyprus list currently stands at 378 species of birds.
There are also two endemic species unique to Cyprus - Cyprus Wheatear and Cyprus Warbler, and several endemic subspecies, among them Cyprus Scops Owl, Cyprus Coal Tit, Short-toed Treecreeper, Cyprus Jay and Crossbill.
